Osu Shopping District — Electric Chaos & Temple Serenity
Osu Shopping District (大須商店街) is Nagoya's most eclectic neighborhood, blending centuries-old temples, retro arcades, maid cafes, second-hand kimono shops, and international street food under covered shopping arcades spanning 1,700+ stores. The district centers on Osu Kannon Temple, a Buddhist temple dating to 1333 (relocated to current site in 1612), which draws worshippers throughout the day while the surrounding streets pulse with youth culture and vintage treasure hunters.
The arcades divide into distinct zones: Banshoji Arcade features electronics and anime goods competing with Tokyo's Akihabara; Niomon Arcade specializes in vintage clothing and American imports from the 1950s–70s; Higashi Niomon offers international cuisine (Turkish kebabs, Taiwanese boba, Brazilian churrasco). The entire district operates as organized chaos — Buddhist incense mingles with grilled takoyaki aromas, and traditional obaachan (grandmothers) shopping for tea share sidewalks with cosplayers.
