Sada Misaki Peninsula — Dramatic Coastal Cliffs
Sada Misaki is a narrow peninsula extending 40km into the Bungo Channel, forming Shikoku's westernmost point. The dramatic coastline features 100-meter vertical cliffs, lighthouse viewpoints, and powerful currents where the Seto Inland Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula's remote location and challenging access keep it uncrowded despite spectacular scenery.
Local fishing villages dot the coast, serving ultra-fresh seafood including seki-aji and seki-saba (premium mackerel and horse mackerel caught in the swift currents).
Opening Hours
Lighthouse grounds: free access all hours. Michi-no-Eki Misaki roadside station: approximately 9:00–17:00. No set hours for coastal drive — daylight recommended.
Closed: Coastal access year-round. Roadside station facilities may close for holidays — check locally.
Entrance Fee
Free. Lighthouse grounds: free. Coastal driving: fuel cost only. Seafood restaurants in Yawatahama: ¥2,000–3,000 for premium seki-aji/seki-saba sashimi set.
Best Season
Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) for clear skies and best visibility to Kyushu across the channel. Summer (July–August) for Futami Beach swimming but can be hot on the coastal drive.
Visit Duration
Full peninsula drive round-trip from Yawatahama: 3–4 hours including stops. Lighthouse viewpoint: 30 minutes. Futami Beach: 1–2 hours. Allow a full half-day for the drive plus seafood lunch.
