Sandankyo Gorge — Emerald Waters & Dramatic Canyon
Sandankyo Gorge (三段峡) is a 16-kilometer river gorge carved through the Chugoku Mountains in northwestern Hiroshima, renowned for its emerald-green waters, sheer rock walls, dense forests, and dramatic natural scenery. Designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1953, Sandankyo features five distinct scenic sections (the 'Five Views') connected by riverside trails and wooden boardwalks, with waterfalls, clear pools, and autumn foliage creating a wilderness experience rare in accessible Japanese landscapes.
The gorge's hiking trails range from easy riverside walks (1–2 hours for highlights) to full-day treks through the entire gorge. Key spots include Kurobuchi (黒淵, 'Black Pool') with jet-black still waters reflecting surrounding cliffs, Sarutobi (猿飛, 'Monkey Leap') where the river narrows to a dramatic chasm, and Sandanfall (三段滝), a three-tiered waterfall. Small wooden ferries (渡し舟, ¥500–700) transport visitors across deeper pools, adding adventure to the hike. The water's emerald color, caused by mineral content and depth, is most vivid in spring and summer; autumn (mid-October to early November) transforms the gorge with red-gold foliage contrasting against the green river. Sandankyo's relative remoteness (1.5 hours from Hiroshima City) keeps crowds low, offering a tranquil nature escape for hikers and photographers.
