Spa Resort Hawaiians — Indoor Tropical Water Park & Hula Shows
Spa Resort Hawaiians (スパリゾートハワイアンズ) is Japan's largest indoor water park, a surreal tropical complex featuring constant 28°C air temperature, palm trees, white sand beaches, and massive water slides — all located in Fukushima's mountains far from any ocean. The resort originated as a recovery project after local coal mines closed in the 1960s; miners drilled hot spring wells and transformed the mining town into a spa destination. The facility uses natural geothermal hot springs (42°C, 3.5 million liters daily) to heat the pools and maintain tropical climate year-round, even during Fukushima's snowy winters.
The complex includes six themed zones: Water Park (giant slides, wave pool), Springs Park (outdoor rotenburo), Spa Garden (relaxation pools), Virport (fitness pools), Edo Jowa Yoichi (Edo-period theme baths), and the highlight — daily Polynesian hula shows performed by the resort's professional dance troupe, who train under Hawaiian instructors. The hula shows (twice daily, included with admission) feature fire dancing, traditional Hawaiian music, and elaborate costumes. The combination of hot springs, water slides, and tropical atmosphere creates an otherworldly experience completely unexpected in northern Japan.
