Tsuwano (津和野) is a preserved castle town nicknamed 'Little Kyoto of San'in' for its traditional architecture, samurai district, and cultural heritage. The town's defining feature is Tonomachi Street's irrigation canals filled with thousands of colorful koi carp swimming between white-walled samurai residences. The contrast of bright orange fish against pristine white walls creates Tsuwano's iconic imagery.
The compact town (pop. 7,000) retains Edo-period layout with samurai residences, sake breweries, Catholic church (from hidden Christian history), and Taikodani Inari Shrine with 1,000 red torii gates ascending the mountainside. The mountain setting and preserved architecture create time-capsule atmosphere.
