Yagigahana is a wall of rhyolite more than 200 metres high standing directly over the Ikarashi river in the Shitada valley, south-east of Sanjo. It has no summit path and nothing built on it; the point is the face itself, which is close enough to the road that it fills the windscreen as you come round the bend.

Peregrine falcons have nested on it for as long as records exist, and in 1965 the cliff was designated a prefectural natural monument as a peregrine breeding site. Birds work the updraft along the face through spring. Autumn colour on the surrounding slopes peaks around late October into early November, and in winter the wall holds snow in its ledges in horizontal bands. A day-use hot spring sits at the foot of it, with baths angled at the cliff.

Insider Guide

Premium
**The view is from the valley floor, not from above.** There is no trail up the face. The bridge and the riverbank below it are the vantage points, and both are a two-minute walk from parking. **Peregrines through spring.** Nesting runs roughly March to June and birds work the updraft along the wall. Binoculars help; the nest ledges are not marked and locals will not point them out, which is the correct handling of a protected breeding site. **Late October into early November for colour.** The cliff is grey rock and the slopes around it turn; the contrast is the reason people photograph it. **The onsen faces the cliff on purpose.** Iiyuratei's baths look straight at the wall, which in falling snow is the best seat in the valley. Charges and hours change seasonally. **The Kitaimogawa rice terraces are nearby.** A small terraced hillside a short drive east, with Awagatake behind it — a quieter alternative to the crowded terrace viewpoints further south in the prefecture.
