Yamaga lanterns are made entirely of washi paper and glue. No wood, no wire, no metal — the shrines, castles, palanquins and pagodas on display here are folded and pasted from paper alone, at a scale and level of detail that makes people assume there must be a frame inside. There is not.

The craft is tied to the Yamaga Toro Matsuri, at which a thousand women dance through the streets at night with lit gold paper lanterns balanced on their heads. The museum is in a 1925 former bank building, itself a registered cultural property, and shows the finest work of the town's lantern makers along with demonstrations by craftsmen. Miniature lantern-making sessions can be booked. Admission is ¥300 and it opens nine to six.

Yamaga 1606-2, Yamaga, in the town centre a few minutes from Yachiyoza. Closed 29 December – 1 January. Admission ¥300 for adults and high school students and ¥150 for elementary and junior high school students. The building is a former bank of 1925 and a registered national tangible cultural property. Lantern-making demonstrations are held and miniature lantern-making sessions can be booked in advance.

**There is no frame inside.** Paper and glue only, including the structural parts. Once you accept that, the scale of the castle and shrine models becomes genuinely startling. **Watch the demonstration.** Craftsmen work on site. Seeing how a paper strip is turned into a load-bearing pillar is the whole visit. **Book the miniature session ahead.** Making one yourself needs a reservation and takes about an hour. **The building is a 1925 bank.** Registered as a cultural property in its own right, which is a fitting container for the collection. **The festival is in August.** A thousand women dancing at night with gold paper lanterns on their heads. If you can be here for it, the museum makes far more sense afterwards.
