What a membership covers
The split is deliberate and consistent: what a place is stays free, and what it takes to get there at the right hour is the paid part. That is the work this site does that a guidebook does not, and it is the only thing behind the membership.
Detailed access & timing
The part of a spot page that is hardest to find anywhere else: nearest station with the walk from it, how long the journey takes from the region's hub, which combination of train, bus and taxi actually works, and where to park with what it costs. Shown on spots that have real substance to show — at least three of the six access fields filled in — rather than on every page as a formality.
The insider guide
Every spot carries one: the hour to arrive to have the place to yourself, the entrance most visitors miss, what the coach tours do and when, and what is genuinely worth skipping. The opening of it is free to read on every page, so you can judge the writing before paying for the rest of it.
Complete day-by-day itineraries
Day 1 of every route is free in full. Premium opens the remaining days along with the parts that make a route executable rather than aspirational — transit legs in order, where to sleep each night and why that town, meal plans with the reservation reality, a booking checklist and a day-by-day budget.
Downloadable PDF guides
4 long-form guides written for offline use — transit, onsen and ryokan, eating, and the seasonal festival calendar. Written in-house, no third-party material, and yours to keep on a phone that has no signal in a mountain valley.
Unlimited saves and trips
Free accounts can keep 10 saved spots and 1 trip in the planner. Premium removes both limits, which matters once a trip stops being one route and turns into several drafts you are comparing.
What is free, always
Most of this site is free and stays that way whether or not the membership is running. A membership adds depth to pages you can already read in full; it never puts a wall in front of them.

Where the money goes, and what it does not buy
Memberships pay for the slow part of this site: checking opening hours and admission prices against the operator's own published source, sourcing photographs that actually show the place rather than a stock image of somewhere similar, and writing access notes for places that no one else has bothered to document in English. Spot pages record when their facts were last verified and against which source, so you can see which parts of the catalogue that work has reached.
A membership does not buy influence over what appears here. Nothing on this site is a paid placement, no operator has ever paid to be included or ranked, and no listing has been altered at a business's request. Advertising and affiliate links exist and are disclosed, and they are kept structurally separate from what gets covered — the editorial policy sets out exactly how.
