Museums always charge, which sets them apart from most of the religious and outdoor sites on this site. A regional or municipal museum is commonly a few hundred yen; a prefectural art museum's permanent collection is in the several-hundred to around a thousand range; a major touring exhibition in a big city is more and is often sold as a separate, sometimes timed, ticket on top. Budget ninety minutes for a mid-sized museum and a half-day for a national one.

The most useful distinction in this category is between the big encyclopaedic museums and the small single-subject ones. The large institutions in Tokyo and Kyoto have the famous objects and the good English. The small ones — a museum of one craft, one industry, one disaster, one collector — are where the specific history of a region is actually explained, and they are frequently nearly empty, staffed by someone delighted that you came, and signed only in Japanese.

Two operational facts save wasted journeys. Most museums close one day a week and it is usually Monday, shifting to Tuesday when a public holiday falls on the Monday. And many close entirely for a week or two between exhibitions, which is not visible from the front page of a website and is worth checking for anything you are travelling specifically to see.

Photography rules vary by institution and often by room within one. Permanent collections are more often permissive than special exhibitions; loans from other collections are the usual reason for a ban. Look for the posted sign rather than assuming either way, and never use flash.

Choose against your itinerary rather than by reputation. A museum is the correct answer to specific problems: it is raining, it is the hottest part of an August afternoon, you have three hours and a suitcase, or you have just arrived somewhere and understand nothing about it yet. Picking one for the last of those reasons — the local history museum on your first afternoon in an unfamiliar prefecture — makes everything you see for the rest of the week legible, and almost nobody does it.

If you want art rather than context, the criteria are different. Check what the permanent collection is before you check what the special exhibition is; travelling for a temporary show and finding it sold out or between hangings is a common and entirely avoidable disappointment. And for well-known museums in Tokyo and Kyoto, look at whether timed tickets are being sold, because for a popular show they will be and the on-the-day option may not exist.

For a small single-subject museum, the question is whether the subject is the region's own. A museum of local ceramics in the town that makes them, or of a mine in the valley that was mined, is worth an hour of anyone's time. A general art collection in a small city rarely is unless something specific in it drew you there.

Whichever you pick, confirm the closing day. It is the single most common wasted journey in this category and it takes ten seconds.

Going on a Monday. The default national closing day. If Monday is a public holiday, the closure usually slides to Tuesday, which catches people twice.

Not checking for an exhibition changeover. Regional museums shut for a week or two between shows, and the notice is often only on the Japanese page.

Assuming the ticket covers everything. Permanent collection and special exhibition are frequently separate purchases, and the combined ticket is only worth it if you will actually do both.

Arriving an hour before closing. Last admission is commonly thirty minutes before the doors shut, and a museum you get forty minutes in is a museum you have not seen.

Photographing loans. The ban in a special exhibition is usually about somebody else's property, and it is enforced. Check the sign at the entrance to each room, not just the building.

Skipping the audio guide because of the price. At a museum with thin English signage this is the difference between objects and information, and it is a few hundred yen against the cost of getting there.

Overlooking the small municipal museum in favour of the big prefectural one. For understanding where you are, the small one is usually better. It will be quieter, cheaper and stranger.

Expecting a café. Large museums have one. Small ones very often do not, and are nowhere near anything else.
