Gyokusendo has been raising copper vessels by hammer since 1816. The technique, tsuiki-doki, starts from a single flat disc of copper and shrinks it into a teapot or a vase entirely by striking — no seams, no joins, no casting. A kettle takes weeks and passes through several thousand hammer blows, and the marks are left visible because they are the record of the work. Colour comes last, from a chemical patina rather than paint, and ranges from rose through to near-black.

The workshop, storehouse, shop and the gangi walkway in front of it are all Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, and the smiths work in the same room visitors stand in. Tsubame's metalworking goes back to Edo-period nail making and now covers most of Japan's cutlery output; Gyokusendo is the end of that trade where it stayed handwork.

Chuo-dori 2-2-21, Tsubame City. About a short walk from Tsubame Station on the JR Yahiko Line; by car from Tsubamesanjo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen. Workshop viewing runs Monday to Saturday at set times through the day and takes about 30 minutes — check the current schedule and reservation policy with the shop before travelling.

**Watch the hammering, not the finished goods.** The shop sells beautiful objects at prices that reflect the labour; the workshop floor is where the reason for the price is visible. **Copper changes colour in use.** A Gyokusendo kettle darkens over years of heat and handling and the company treats that as the product maturing rather than tarnishing. Polishing it back is not the intent. **Early October for the open factory event.** Tsubame and Sanjo run a four-day open-factory festival in the first week of October when workshops across both cities that are normally closed let people in. Gyokusendo takes part. Dates shift year to year. **Sanjo is the knife half.** Fifteen minutes away, Sanjo makes the blades and hand tools to Tsubame's cutlery and hollowware. A day taking in one workshop in each is the standard way to do this.
