Tekiseisha — location in จังหวัดอิวาเตะ, Ninohe

About seventy per cent of Japan's domestically produced lacquer comes from Joboji in Ninohe, tapped by hand from trees in northern Iwate, southern Aomori and north-eastern Akita. When Kinkakuji or the Golden Hall at Chusonji need restoring, the lacquer comes from here — the national cultural agency now requires domestic urushi for designated buildings, and this is where it exists in quantity.

Joboji lacquerware descends from the everyday bowls used by the monks of Tendaiji from the Heian period: undecorated, thickly coated, made to be used daily rather than displayed. It opens at half past eight, closes on Tuesdays, and viewing is free.

**Seventy per cent of Japan's domestic lacquer.** From this one district. That statistic is why the restoration of national treasures depends on Joboji. **Watch through the studio glass.** Coating and polishing happen on site and are visible from the showroom. Viewing costs nothing. **It is made to be used.** Joboji ware is plain, thickly coated and descended from monks' daily bowls. It is not decorative lacquer and is priced and built accordingly. **Closed Tuesdays.** And it opens early, at half past eight, which suits a morning stop on the way north. **Walk up to Tendaiji.** The temple whose monks' bowls started the tradition is a few minutes away, on a hill, and is the reason any of this is here.
