ยานางาวะสร้างขึ้นบนน้ำ — เครือข่ายคลอง 930 สายที่เดิมขุดเป็นคูป้องกันรอบปราสาท ต่อมาใช้เป็นทางชลประทาน ขนส่ง และระบายน้ำท่วม ปราสาทล่มสลายในยุคเมจิ แต่คลองยังคงอยู่ ทอดผ่านย่านที่อยู่อาศัย ลอดสะพานหิน ผ่านกำแพงสวนที่ห้อยด้วยวิสทีเรียและต้นหลิว เรือถ่อ (ดงโกะ-บุเนะ) ที่แล่นเป็นเรือไม้ท้องแบนซึ่งควบคุมโดยคนถ่อที่ยืนถ่อ — ทักษะที่สืบทอดในครอบครัวเดียวกันมาหลายรุ่น
