Fukuoka has maintained a Chinese commercial presence since the Tang Dynasty trading period, and while the city lacks a formal Chinatown district (unlike Nagasaki or Kobe), the Hakata area contains a concentration of Chinese restaurants established by families that have been in Fukuoka for 3–4 generations. The specialty, developed here and almost unknown elsewhere, is tofuro — a Cantonese-style fermented tofu served as a side condiment with dim sum.

A fixed dim sum lunch typically runs around ¥1,500; request extra tofuro on the side. **Navigation:** The concentration of Chinese-owned shops (selling ingredients, medicinal herbs, dried seafood) in the narrow lanes east of Sumiyoshi Shrine marks the historic Chinese residential quarter — worth exploring separately from restaurants.
