猊鼻溪是砂铁川切凿而成的狭窄石灰岩峡谷,以传统平底船游(舟下り)闻名——船夫撑篙带领乘客逆流而上,穿越高达100公尺的峭壁,一路吟唱传统劳动歌谣。这趟90分钟的来回航程沿溪逆流而上2公里再折返,中途在上游码头停留30分钟,游客可探索步道、朝目标岩石投掷泥球(运玉投掷仪式),并喂食鲤鱼。峡谷两侧岩壁垂直耸立,覆满青苔与蕨类,只留一线狭窄天空可见。船夫(也有女性船夫)会演唱称为猊鼻溪歌的传统歌谣——这原是撑船运送货物时所唱的劳动歌曲。歌声在峭壁间回荡,形成天然的扩音效果。每位船夫都有独特的唱腔;这是真正的民俗传统,而非观光表演。
