Kibitsu Shrine enshrines Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto, the prince whose campaign against a local strongman named Ura is generally taken to be the seed of the Momotaro story. The main hall and worship hall, rebuilt in 1425, are National Treasures and use a roof form called hiyoku irimoya that exists nowhere else in Japan — two gabled hip roofs joined side by side, which from the front reads as a single building and from the hillside reads as two.

Running down the slope from the compound is a covered corridor 360 metres long, following the contour of the ridge so that it rises and falls rather than stepping. Beside it stands the Okamaden, where a ritual called narukama is still performed: rice is steamed over a cauldron said to sit above the buried head of Ura, and the sound the cauldron makes is read as an answer to the question asked.

The reception and amulet office runs 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and prayer bookings close at 2:00 PM. Free to enter. The narukama ritual is received 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and is not performed on Fridays or on December 28 — confirm before travelling. The covered corridor descends the ridge and is step-free for most of its length.

**Walk the corridor both ways.** It falls 360 metres down the ridge and the view back up it, with the roof line following the ground rather than stepping, is the shot everyone comes for. Going down and turning around is a 20-minute round trip. **Narukama is a real ritual, not a demonstration.** You submit a question, rice is steamed over the cauldron, and the sound is interpreted. It runs 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and not on Fridays. Ueda Akinari built a ghost story around it in 1776 and it is still performed the same way. **The roof form exists only here.** Hiyoku irimoya, two joined gabled hip roofs. From the front of the worship hall it is invisible; from the slope beside the corridor it is obvious. **Peonies in late April, hydrangeas in June.** Both are planted along the corridor, which turns the walk into the attraction twice a year. **Kibiji cycling road starts nearby.** The flat route past burial mounds and the Bitchu Kokubunji pagoda runs from here, and rental bicycles are available at the station.
