兴福寺是669年创建的世界遗产,作为权势显赫的藤原氏氏寺、也是奈良七大寺之一。寺院的象征是五重塔(50.1公尺,日本第二高的木塔),曾五度焚毁重建,现存建筑为1426年所建。五重塔与其在猿泽池的倒影,构成奈良最常被拍摄的一景。
寺院境内免费开放,相较多数大寺显得格外开阔。国宝馆收藏日本最精湛的佛教雕塑,包括著名的三面六臂阿修罗像(734年)——现存最美的佛教雕塑之一,以少年的面容流露出令人难忘的忧郁神情。馆藏逾百件国宝与重要文化财,是日本顶级的佛教艺术宝库之一。奈良失去首都地位后寺院历经数世纪衰微,自明治时代起持续修复。
