1945年8月9日11:02,一枚钸弹在浦上谷上空500公尺引爆,估计瞬间夺走4万条性命,1公里半径内化为乌有。长崎原爆资料馆以文物、幸存者证言与太平洋战争的历史脉络记录这场灾难。相邻的和平公园立有和平祈念像——一尊9.7公尺的青铜像,右手指天(核武的威胁)、左手平伸(永恒的和平)。
长崎的原爆记忆与广岛不同之处在于投弹目标:原本的目标是小仓(今北九州),因云层遮蔽而转向长崎。爆炸中心是浦上天主堂——当时亚洲最大的天主教堂——使长崎的基督徒社群成为第二颗原子弹始料未及的牺牲者。
