端岛因外形酷似军舰而以「军舰岛」之名广为人知,是一座6.3公顷的水泥堡垒,曾住着5259人——创下地球史上有纪录以来最高的人口密度。1887至1974年间,这里是三菱经营的海底煤矿设施。煤藏枯竭后,全岛人口在一天之内撤离,留下水泥公寓、学校、医院与娱乐厅,任其承受50年的台风与盐蚀。
如今此岛是世界遗产,仅能搭乘经认可的行程船前往。开放登岛的范围仅南侧水泥护岸的一小段;其余因结构不稳而禁止进入。从指定观景平台望去——一排排骷髅般的水泥高塔、通往虚无的楼梯、中央集会堂坍塌的圆顶——是日本可及范围内最反乌托邦的景象之一。
