Sankyoson Viewpoint — location in 富山县, Tonami

富山县 · Tonami

36.5911°N, 137.0202°E

The Tonami plain is farmed in a pattern found in very few places: instead of villages, each farmhouse stands alone in the middle of its own paddy, and each is surrounded on the north and west by a dense square of planted trees. The trees are called kainyo and they are a windbreak against the winter gales off the Sea of Japan, as well as a source of timber and firewood. There are several thousand of these islands scattered across the plain, and the arrangement is one of the largest surviving dispersed-settlement landscapes in Japan.

From the ground it is invisible — you just see fields and trees. From the viewpoint on the hills at the southern edge, the whole logic appears at once: a flat green plain to the horizon, punctuated evenly by dark clumps of woodland each with a roof in the middle. Flooded paddies in late April and early May reflect the sky and the effect is at its strongest; evening in the same season, with lights coming on one by one across the plain, is the other time to be up there.

独家私藏情报

**Late April to mid May.** The paddies are flooded before rice planting and the whole plain becomes a mirror between the tree clumps. It is the strongest the landscape ever looks. **Evening rather than midday.** As the light goes, the farmhouse lights come on one at a time across the plain and the pattern of the settlement becomes literal. Bring something warm; the viewpoint is exposed. **Understand the trees before you look.** The kainyo windbreaks are planted on the north and west sides against winter gales and were traditionally harvested for timber. Knowing that turns a scenic view into a diagram of how people survived here. **Combine with the tulips.** Tonami is Japan's largest producer of tulip bulbs and the Tulip Fair in late April coincides with the flooded paddies. The two together are the reason to be in this city in spring. **Nothing at the top.** The viewpoint has parking and a view. Bring what you need and do not plan on food.
