Yachiyoza was built in 1910 by the merchants of Yamaga, who put up the money themselves for a proper playhouse in a town that had grown rich on the Kikuchi river trade. It has the full Edo apparatus — revolving stage, trap lifts, sunken box seating, a hanamichi through the audience — combined with German-made rails under the revolve, which was a very 1910 kind of modern.

It fell into disuse and was nearly lost, then restored over years with the town's own fundraising, and it is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property that still stages performances. Between them you can go in for ¥530 and walk the stage, the understage machinery and the boxes. The painted advertisements on the ceiling, sold to local businesses in 1910, are original.

Admission ¥530 for adults and ¥270 for elementary and junior high school students, with group discounts. Phone. **Go under the stage.** The revolve and trap lifts are hand-operated and open to visitors on a viewing ticket. It is the best part and it is included. **Look at the ceiling.** The painted advertisements were sold to Yamaga businesses in 1910 to fund the building and the originals survive. **Closed the second Wednesday.** An easy one to be caught by. Also check whether a performance is scheduled, since viewing stops on those days. **German rails under a kabuki revolve.** Imported steel in a wooden Meiji playhouse in a country town. That combination is exactly what 1910 in provincial Japan looked like. **Combine with the lantern museum.** Yamaga Toro Mingeikan is a few minutes away and the two make the town a half day.
