The Kojiki tells of a rabbit that tricked a line of sharks into forming a bridge so it could cross to the mainland, was skinned alive when it gloated, and was healed by Okuninushi, who then advised it on how to win the princess Yakami — advice that worked, making the rabbit the first matchmaker in Japanese myth. This is where it happened, and the shrine enshrines the rabbit.

It is small, in pine woods above a white-sand bay, with a pond the rabbit is said to have washed in and a scattering of rabbit statues along the approach. People come for matchmaking and, following the healing part of the story, for skin conditions and burns. The beach below is one of the better ones on the San'in coast. It is free, has a large car park shared with a roadside station, and sits directly on Route 9 between Tottori and Kurayoshi.

By car from Tottori-Nishi IC on the San'in Expressway, by Hinomaru bus on the Hakuto Kaigan line from JR Tottori Station to the Hakuto Jinja-mae stop, or by taxi from Tottori Station. Free to visit. Free parking for 125 vehicles shared with the Shinwa no Sato Shirousagi roadside station.

**Read the myth first.** Without the Kojiki story of the rabbit, the sharks and Okuninushi, this is a small shrine with rabbit statues. With it, every element on the site is a scene from the text. **Buy the white pebbles.** Small white stones are sold at the shrine for writing wishes on and placing at the torii. It is the local practice rather than an ordinary ema. **Walk down to the beach.** Hakuto beach below the shrine is a curve of white sand and is a swimming and surfing beach in summer, and empty the rest of the year. **It is on Route 9 with a roadside station.** Which makes it an easy stop when driving the coast rather than a destination, and the parking is free and large. **Skin conditions as well as matchmaking.** The healing half of the story gives the shrine a second, less publicised following. The votive plaques reflect both.
