彦根城是日本現存12座原始城堡之一（自江戶時代保存至今），建於1603至1622年。這座城堡保留了真實的木造建築、陡峭的防禦階梯，以及未經現代重建的原始結構。三層天守展現了兼具實用軍事設計與美學優雅的建築工藝。
城郭範圍內有玄宮園，一座傳統大名迴遊式庭園，內有池塘、茶室與城堡景致。原始城堡建築與精緻庭園的結合，打造出完整的封建時代體驗。
