Kitagi granite built Osaka Castle's walls, the foundations of Tokyo Station and the approach at Yasukuni Shrine, and it was cut out of this island for four hundred years. What is left is a set of quarries so deep they have filled with water: sheer walls of pale granite dropping into pools of extraordinary green, with the cut lines of the extraction still visible down the faces.

The lookout stands on the lip of one of them. The island is part of the Setouchi Stone Islands heritage story, and a handful of quarries are still working, so the sound of cutting carries across the island. Kitagishima is an hour by ferry from Kasaoka and has a few hundred residents; the lookout keeps short opening hours and the boat timetable governs everything, which is why almost nobody comes.

**The lookout is open two hours a day.** 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
