熊野古道是穿越紀伊山地的70公里石徑,連接京都與和歌山南部的熊野三山三座神社。11世紀天皇曾親自走過這條路,僧侶、武士與農民也都曾為了在聖地淨化身心而踏上此途。2004年,聯合國教科文組織將其列為世界遺產,全球僅有兩條朝聖路線獲此殊榮(另一條是西班牙的聖雅各朝聖之路)。多數人走的主線是中邊路——全程走完需3到4天,也可以只挑選幾段來當日健行。步道有些地方鋪著石板,有些是泥土路,經常連續好幾個小時都是陡坡,兩旁是遮天蔽日的500年老杉。沿途會經過王子神社(原有99座,現存約30座),這些曾是朝聖者的休息站;夜宿的民宿,同一家族已接待朝聖者長達200年。多數清晨山谷都籠罩著薄霧,石雕佛像上長滿青苔,有時走上一小時都遇不到任何人。比起聖雅各之路,這裡更安靜、更多森林、更適合獨自沉思,也更少社交。紅白相間的路標清晰易辨不會迷路,但這是真正的登山健行——下坡路段會讓你的膝蓋有感覺。
