黑部峽谷鐵道全長20.1公里,穿越日本最深的V形峽谷,沿黑部川跨越41座橋樑、穿過22條隧道。這條鐵道原建於1926年,用於運送水壩建設物資,如今作為觀光路線,以開放式小火車(トロッコ)帶旅客飽覽翡翠色溪水、陡峭斷崖與秋季楓紅的無遮蔽美景。
鐵道從宇奈月溫泉站出發,終點為欅平站(海拔599公尺),沿途停靠黑薙站(可通往溫泉)與鐘釣站(可轉乘空中纜車、通往河岸步道)。行程亮點包括跨越60公尺高的後曳橋(朱紅橋橫跨青翠溪谷)以及沿崖壁傾瀉的瀑布。單程80分鐘,深入公路無法抵達的荒野秘境。
鐵道自4月下旬營運至11月下旬(冬季因積雪休運)。秋季(10月中至11月初)是最熱門的季節,此時峽谷染成紅橙黃三色,與翡翠溪水形成強烈對比。
