松本城是日本五座國寶城之一,也是全國現存最古老的原始木造天守(1593–1594年建)。與白牆的姬路城不同,松本城外覆黑漆木板,因而別名「烏城」。城為戰國時代的戰事而設計,有陡峭的階梯、隱藏的室間,以及為抵禦火槍而策略性配置的槍眼。
六層的天守倒映在環繞的護城河上,構成日本最常被拍攝的景緻之一——尤其在櫻花季(4月初)與賞楓季(11月)格外動人。內部保存原始的木地板、兵器展示、武士盔甲,以及太平時期增建的月見櫓。登上最高層可眺望北阿爾卑斯群峰。
