Mount Tsukuba is a twin-peaked mountain rising 877 meters from rice fields and suburban sprawl, visible from Tokyo on clear winter mornings 60 kilometers away. The two summits — Nantai-san (male peak, 871m) and Nyotai-san (female peak, 877m) — embody Izanagi and Izanami, the creator gods in Shinto mythology. Unlike the jagged Japan Alps, Tsukuba is rounded and forested, the kind of mountain you can hike in sneakers and reach by lunch.

Most people take the cable car from Tsukuba-san Shrine at the base — a short ride that climbs through oak and maple forest before emerging at a plaza with vending machines and a lookout deck. From there it's Near Nantai-san for the 360-degree view: Kanto Plain spreading east in a checkerboard of towns and farms, Tokyo Skytree visible as a gray needle on hazy days, Mount Fuji floating white and alone to the southwest on winter mornings when pollution is low. Nyotai-san, the female peak, is quieter — a 10-minute ridge walk from Nantai-san, with its own small shrine and a slightly higher summit. In November the whole mountain turns red and orange, and on autumn and spring mornings fog sometimes fills the valley while the peaks stand clear above a white sea.

**Hiking up:** The Otsutsugawa Trail starts behind Tsukuba-san Shrine and climbs 2.8 kilometers over stone steps and dirt switchbacks — 90 minutes at a steady pace, passing a half-dozen small shrines and stone fox guardians. Start by 7:00am in summer to beat the heat, or anytime in cooler months. The Shirakumobashi Trail is shorter (1.6km, 60 minutes) but steeper, with rockier footing; it merges with the Otsutsugawa Trail 200 meters below the summit. If you hike up, take the cable car down for ¥730 one-way to save your knees. **Catching the cloud sea:** Unkai happens on calm autumn or spring mornings after a cool night follows a warm day — radiation fog forms in the valley while the summit stays clear. Get to the cable car station before 6:00am (it runs from 5:00am during unkai season in October and November). The fog usually burns off by 8:00am, so you have a narrow window. Check weather forecasts for overnight low temps around 10°C and daytime highs above 20°C, with no wind predicted — those are prime unkai conditions. **Summit loop:** From the cable car station it's 5 minutes uphill to Nantai-san (male peak), where a steel observation platform gives you the big Kanto Plain panorama — Tokyo Skytree visible on clear mornings, Mount Fuji floating white to the southwest in winter when the air is dry. Then descend 50 meters and follow the ridge path 10 minutes to Nyotai-san (female peak), which is quieter and has the actual high point at 877 meters. The whole loop takes 30 minutes if you stop to read shrine plaques and take photos. **Plum blossoms:** In late February and March, 1,000 plum trees around Tsukuba-san Shrine at the base bloom pink and white. Fewer people visit than Kairakuen (Mito), even though the trees are just as old and the setting more dramatic. Combine plum viewing with a summit hike for a full day. **Summit snacks:** The summit plaza sells gama-no-abura soft-serve (¥400), which sounds weird (toad oil?) but tastes like salted caramel with a hint of miso. It's based on a traditional folk medicine peddlers used to sell at the mountain, though the ice cream is obviously not real toad extract. Down at the base, several udon shops make tsukuba-udon from local wheat — thick noodles, chewy, served hot or cold (¥800). **Shrine visit:** Tsukuba-san Shrine at the mountain base has been here for 1,500 years, though the current main hall dates from 1633. The wooden carvings under the eaves show dragons and waves in Edo-period style, faded now but still detailed if you look close. Five minutes inside the shrine grounds there's a 600-year-old cedar tree thick enough that three people can't reach around it.
