The approach to Ohirasan Shrine is about a thousand stone steps up the side of Mt. Ohira, and for two weeks in June it is lined with roughly 2,500 hydrangea bushes. Locals call that section the Ajisai-zaka, the hydrangea slope, and it is one of the better-known things in Tochigi City among people from the prefecture and essentially unknown outside it.

At the top there is a shrine, a view over the Kanto plain, and — more to the point for most people making the climb — a row of tea houses selling the mountain's three specialities: dango, yakitori and tamagoyaki. The combination has an explanation. There was a custom of donating roosters that crowed at night to the shrine, and the donated birds' eggs became the omelette while the birds themselves became the grilled skewers. Eating all three at the top after a thousand steps is the local ritual, and the view over the plain comes with it.

Hirai-cho, Tochigi City. By car or taxi from JR and Tobu Tochigi Station; the hydrangea slope starts at the foot of the approach. Shrine grounds free to enter. Hydrangeas typically peak from mid to late June. Tea houses near the summit sell the mountain's three specialities: dango, yakitori and tamagoyaki.

**A thousand steps is a real climb.** Allow 30–40 minutes up at a steady pace. There is a road to a car park nearer the top if the steps are not viable, but the hydrangeas are on the steps and skipping them skips the reason to come in June. **Mid to late June, and it is short.** The hydrangea window is roughly two weeks and shifts with the rains. The prefecture publishes bloom updates; going on spec in early June usually means green bushes. **Order all three at the top.** Dango, yakitori and tamagoyaki, at one of the tea houses on the ridge. It is not a coincidence that these three are the specialities — the rooster donation custom explains both the eggs and the skewers. **The view is the other half.** From the ridge the Kanto plain opens out, and on a clear winter day the visibility is far better than in the humid June bloom season. The mountain is worth climbing outside hydrangea season for that alone. **Cherry and maple bracket the year.** The mountain is also a well-known blossom site in early April and turns in late November, both far quieter than the June fortnight.
