佐渡金銀山自1601年持續開採至1989年,388年間共產出78噸黃金與2330噸白銀——是全球運作時間最久的貴金屬礦山之一。江戶時代,佐渡的黃金為德川幕府提供財政支持,一度占日本總體經濟產出的20%。礦坑隧道在地底延伸達400公里,橫跨多個海拔高度,如今的參觀路線行經江戶時代手工鑿刻的坑道,真人大小的機械人偶重現礦工使用油燈、鑿子與人力礦車的傳統開採技法。
礦山博物館展示至今仍留在坑道壁面的真實金礦脈、1600年代的排水系統,以及以水銀齊合法從碎礦中分離黃金的精煉工坊。地表礦區則展現由400年露天開採所形成的壯觀V形峽谷(道遊之割戶)——這道深達74公尺的地質傷痕,已成為佐渡最具代表性的地標景致。
