仙巖園是統治薩摩藩700年的島津家，於1658年打造的一座壯闊大名庭園（占地5萬平方公尺）。這座庭園以大尺度運用借景技法——將櫻島火山與鹿兒島灣納入設計景觀之中，透過修剪整齊的庭園、池塘與縮小版的富士山模型，將遠方的火山與海灣一同收入眼底。
鄰近的尚古集成館博物館，詳述了島津家在日本近代化過程中扮演的角色——他們於1865年在此建造了日本第一座西式工廠，生產大砲與蒸汽機。
