櫻島是全球最活躍的火山之一，每年噴發數千次——對灣對岸的鹿兒島市居民來說，噴煙與降灰是日常生活的一部分。這座火山主宰著整片天際線，錐狀山頭高達1117公尺，原本是一座獨立小島，直到1914年一次熔岩噴發才與本土相連。
遊客可開車或搭巴士抵達火山山腰的展望點，走過熔岩凍結瞬間的地貌，在噴煙繚繞的火山口下泡足湯，還能參觀被埋鳥居——一座半埋於火山灰中的神社鳥居，刻意保留原狀，作為1914年那場猛烈噴發的紀念碑。
