櫻島是全球最活躍的火山之一,每年噴發數千次——對灣對岸的鹿兒島市居民來說,噴煙與降灰是日常生活的一部分。這座火山主宰著整片天際線,錐狀山頭高達1117公尺,原本是一座獨立小島,直到1914年一次熔岩噴發才與本土相連。
遊客可開車或搭巴士抵達火山山腰的展望點,走過熔岩凍結瞬間的地貌,在噴煙繚繞的火山口下泡足湯,還能參觀被埋鳥居——一座半埋於火山灰中的神社鳥居,刻意保留原狀,作為1914年那場猛烈噴發的紀念碑。
