Shodoshima Olive Park celebrates the island's unique status as the birthplace of commercial olive cultivation in Japan, where the Mediterranean climate and mild winters have supported olive groves since 1908. The park spreads across hillsides overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, with over 2,000 olive trees creating a distinctly Mediterranean landscape rare in Japan. White-walled buildings with terracotta roofs, herb gardens fragrant with rosemary and lavender, and a replica Greek windmill complete the Southern European atmosphere. The main attraction is the olive groves themselves, where visitors can walk among trees laden with green and ripening olives depending on season, learning about cultivation techniques adapted to Japanese conditions over a century of experimentation. The park's museum details Shodoshima's olive history, from the first seeds imported from America through modern production methods that yield award-winning Japanese olive oil. The on-site restaurant serves Mediterranean-Japanese fusion cuisine incorporating local olives, fresh island vegetables, and Seto Inland Sea seafood, while the shop offers tastings and sales of various olive oils, cosmetics, and olive-based products. A small zoo housing Mediterranean animals and a playground make the park family-friendly. Throughout the grounds, photogenic spots include a Greek-style courtyard with blue and white striped walls and the hilltop windmill offering panoramic sea views.
