Tsukuba Winery — location in 茨城縣, Tsukuba

茨城縣 · Tsukuba

35.9892°N, 140.2051°E

Ushiku Chateau (despite the name, located in Ushiku, not Tsukuba) is Japan's oldest winery, established in 1903 by entrepreneur Kamiya Denbei who sought to create European-quality wine using Japanese grapes. The estate features French-style brick buildings, underground wine cellars, and vineyards planted with hybrid grape varieties suited to Japan's humid climate. The winery operated continuously until 2000, when wine production ceased, but the historic buildings and grounds were preserved as a cultural heritage site.

Today, Ushiku Chateau functions as a museum, beer garden, and event venue. The estate also operates a craft beer brewery, restaurant, and seasonal beer garden under century-old plane trees. The combination of Meiji-era industrial architecture, wine history, and relaxed garden atmosphere makes it a unique counterpoint to Tsukuba's futuristic science facilities.

**Cellar tour:** The 30-minute guided tour (Japanese only, English pamphlet provided) descends into the original 1903 brick wine cellars — cool, dark, arched tunnels where oak barrels aged wine for decades. The brickwork is French-influenced, built by Japanese craftsmen trained in Western techniques. The cellars maintain 15°C year-round, a natural climate control system. **Kamiya Denbei museum:** The second floor of the main building displays Kamiya's personal effects, vintage wine labels, early 20th-century winemaking equipment, and photographs of the estate in its prime. Kamiya was a Renaissance figure — founded the famous Denki Bran liqueur, opened Tokyo's first bar (still operating in Asakusa), and promoted Western drinking culture in Meiji Japan. **Beer garden (April–October):** Under massive plane trees planted in 1903, long communal tables serve craft beer brewed on-site (pilsner, weizen, stout, ¥600/glass), German-style sausages, pretzels, and grilled meats. It is relaxed, family-friendly, and popular with locals. Weekday afternoons (2:00–5:00pm) are uncrowded. **Restaurant:** The main dining room serves French-Japanese fusion in a high-ceilinged brick hall. The lunch course (¥2,200) includes wine-braised beef, seasonal vegetables, and dessert — excellent value. Dinner requires reservation. **Photography:** The brick architecture (main building, cellars, gatehouse) is photogenic — European industrial aesthetic rare in Japan. The plane tree avenue in autumn (November) turns golden. Late afternoon light (3:00–5:00pm) warms the red brick beautifully. **Combine with:** Ushiku Daibutsu (giant Buddha statue, see separate entry) is a drive. Visit the Buddha in the morning, then the winery for lunch and beer garden.
