山寺懸掛於山形市北方的火山峭壁之上,殿堂與寶塔直接建於距下方稻田417公尺高的岩壁之中。攀登穿越千年杉林(樹幹粗達2公尺)的1015級石階,才能抵達山頂寺院。步道途經被數個世紀風化磨平的摩崖佛像,接著豁然開朗,抵達懸崖邊的殿堂,能看見自己呼出的白霧飄散於下方山谷之上。松尾芭蕉於1689年攀登這些石階,只聽見蟬鳴;他坐過的地方如今立著俳句紀念碑。這座寺院由比叡山延曆寺第三代座主圓仁於860年創建,山伏修行僧至今仍在此進行冬季修行——清晨有時能聽見他們的法螺聲在峭壁間迴盪。攀登過程雙腿會感到灼熱(規劃上山50分鐘、下山40分鐘),但根據寺院教義,每踏一階都能消除一個世俗慾望。從山頂五大堂眺望,可將整個山形盆地盡收眼底,若時機恰逢黃昏,還能看見城市燈火漸漸亮起。
