Kajo Park occupies the site of Yamagata Castle, once one of the largest feudal castles in the Tohoku region. Built in the 14th century and expanded in the 16th century by the Mogami clan, the castle featured a massive five-layer network of moats and stone walls protecting the inner keep. The castle buildings were demolished during the Meiji Restoration, but the park preserves the moats, stone foundations, and earthwork fortifications. The main gate (Ote-mon) was reconstructed in 1991 using traditional Edo-period joinery techniques, providing a sense of the castle's original scale. The park is most famous for cherry blossoms — approximately 1,500 somei-yoshino cherry trees line the inner moat, creating a pink tunnel reflection in the water during peak bloom (mid-April). The park also hosts Yamagata's annual Hanagasa Festival staging area (early August), where thousands of dancers parade through the city wearing flower-decorated hats.

**Cherry blossom timing:** Yamagata's cherry bloom is 7-10 days later than Tokyo due to colder climate. Peak bloom usually falls mid-April (April 13-18 historically). The Japan Meteorological Agency releases sakura forecasts in early March; monitor for precise timing. The moat reflections are best in morning (7:00-9:00) before wind disturbs the water surface — glassy conditions create perfect mirror symmetry. Evening illumination is romantic but crowded; pre-dawn (5:30-6:30) offers solitude plus morning light. **Beyond cherry blossoms:** While hanami is peak season, Kajo Park is pleasant year-round. Autumn (late October-early November): ginkgo and maple provide yellow-orange foliage. Winter (January-February): snow blankets the moat walls creating monochrome Zen aesthetics. Summer: the park hosts bon-odori folk dance practices in evenings. **Historical exploration:** Walk the full moat perimeter (3km, 45 minutes) to appreciate the castle's defensive scale. The northern and western sections are less visited and retain more of the original stone walls (一文字石垣, ichimonji-ishigaki, 'single-character style' flat stacking technique). The eastern section has excavation sites where archaeologists are uncovering additional foundations; viewing platforms explain the findings. **Local hanami culture:** During cherry blossom season, locals set up blue tarps under the trees for hanami parties (花見, flower viewing). This is primarily an evening activity (18:00-21:00) involving sake, bento, and socializing. If you're curious about the tradition, small groups are usually welcoming to foreign visitors who approach politely and bring a contribution (a bottle of sake or snacks from a convenience store). It's a genuine way to experience local culture beyond tourist observation.
