Chikubushima

Island timing strategy: The boat schedule allows 2.5–3 hours on island (check return times at pier upon arrival). This is adequate for temple visit (30–40 min), lunch at island's two restaurants (30–40 min), and souvenir shopping. The island has no villages or hiking trails — it's purely religious complex. Arrive on morning boat (9:00–10:00 departures) to avoid tour group congestion; afternoon boats bring busloads of older Japanese tourists.

Kawarake nage ritual: At Tsukubusuma Shrine, visitors perform kawarake nage (土器投げ) — throwing small earthenware discs through a torii gate standing in the lake, 20 meters offshore. Successful throw (disc passes through torii) grants wish fulfillment. Purchase discs (¥300/2 discs) and throw from platform. Most discs hit the torii frame and shatter — the few that pass through feel like genuine achievement. The lake below is littered with broken pottery shards from centuries of wishes.

Boat ride experience: The 30-minute lake crossing provides perspective on Lake Biwa's scale — the shoreline recedes, revealing how the lake functions as inland sea. On calm days, the water is mirror-smooth and blue-green; on windy days, whitecaps create rough chop. The boat passes small uninhabited islands and fishing boats. The approach to Chikubushima is dramatic — the island's steep forested slopes and temple buildings emerge from mist like a classical Japanese painting.
