Autumn is the most famous season when the gorge explodes in crimson, orange, and gold foliage, typically peaking in mid-November when over 200,000 trees create one of western Japan's premier autumn color displays. During this period, expect significant crowds, particularly on weekends. For photography and smaller crowds, visit on weekdays or arrive at opening time. The autumn color season is relatively brief, lasting only 2-3 weeks, so monitor foliage reports carefully. Spring offers a gentler beauty when fresh green leaves emerge and mountain wildflowers bloom along hiking trails. Summer provides cool respite from coastal heat, with temperatures 5-7 degrees cooler than sea level, making it popular for hiking enthusiasts who explore the network of trails connecting to Shodoshima's highest peaks. Winter sees few visitors but offers stark beauty when occasional snowfall dusts the rock formations. From the summit station, the most rewarding hike is the 40-minute trail to the actual gorge overlook points, where you can peer down into the ravine and appreciate the full scale of the rock formations. Serious hikers can continue to Hoshigajo Summit or connect with trails descending to Olive Park on the island's southern coast. The ropeway base station area features museums dedicated to island history and the Twenty-Four Eyes novel, a beloved Japanese story set on Shodoshima. The nearby Choshi-kei gorge offers less crowded hiking along a stream with small waterfalls and moss-covered rocks. For the best photographic light, morning visits illuminate the east-facing cliffs, while afternoon light enhances the western gorge walls. The ropeway operates in all weather, but fog and rain obscure views, so check weather forecasts before making the journey from Tonosho.
