Premium
**Open-air vs enclosed cars:** The torokko trolley cars come in two types: open-air (普通客車, recommended for views and photo opportunities) and enclosed with windows (特別客車, warmer but glass obstructs photos). Open-air cars are included in standard fare. Enclosed cars require ¥530 surcharge — worth it only in rain or for elderly passengers sensitive to cold. Dress warmly even in summer as wind-chill is significant. **Keyakidaira hiking:** At the terminus (Keyakidaira Station, 599m), a 20-minute riverside trail loops along the Kurobe River through forest to Sarutobi Gorge (猿飛峡, 'Monkey Leap Gorge') where the river narrows to 3 meters — allegedly so narrow monkeys can leap across. The trail offers close-up views of the emerald river. The hike is flat and easy. Allocate 90 minutes at Keyakidaira (including trail loop) before returning train. **Kuronagi Onsen detour:** At Kuronagi Station (黒薙, midpoint), an unpaved 600-meter trail (20-minute walk) leads to Kuronagi Onsen (黒薙温泉) — a remote hot spring ryokan with day-use baths (¥700). The sulfur spring is renowned for skin-beautifying properties. For onsen enthusiasts, this detour adds 90 minutes (includes bathing time). Note: The trail is closed in rain due to landslide risk; check status at station. **Autumn foliage timing:** The gorge's foliage peaks mid-October to early November, with exact timing varying by elevation and year. Late October is generally safest bet. The railway sells out weeks in advance for foliage season weekends — book 1 month ahead or visit weekdays. Early morning trains (first departure 7:30am) offer fewer crowds and morning light on the gorge. **Photography:** The Atobiki Bridge (後曳橋, red bridge spanning the gorge) is the railway's most iconic view — occurs 30 minutes into the journey from Unazuki. The train slows but doesn't stop; use fast shutter speed (1/500s+) to avoid motion blur. For stable shots, disembark at Keyakidaira and photograph from the riverside trail where you can compose without train vibration.
