Toyama Castle (富山城) is a reconstructed castle in central Toyama City, originally built in the 16th century and destroyed multiple times through war and fire. The current tenshu (main keep) is a 1954 concrete reconstruction housing the Toyama City Folk Museum. While the castle lacks historical authenticity compared to original-structure castles, the surrounding Toyama Castle Park is pleasant, with cherry blossoms in spring and illuminated moats in evening.

The unique experience is the Matsukawa River Cruise (松川遊覧船) — a 30-minute narrated boat ride along the castle's outer moat (now the Matsukawa River) passing under bridges and through tree-lined waterways. The cruise offers perspectives of the castle, riverside cherry trees (500+ trees bloom late March–early April), and urban Toyama from the water. In spring, the cruise passes beneath tunnels of cherry blossoms; in summer, greenery shades the boat; autumn brings red foliage.

The combination of castle grounds and moat cruise makes a relaxing half-day urban activity, especially during cherry blossom season when the river becomes a pink corridor.

**Castle vs cruise priority:** Toyama Castle's reconstruction is historically unimpressive — the museum inside displays local history artifacts but lacks English explanations. The main appeal is exterior views and park setting. The Matsukawa River Cruise is more memorable, offering unique perspectives and seasonal scenery. If time is limited, prioritize the cruise over castle museum entry. The castle park itself is free and worth a 20-minute stroll regardless. **Cherry blossom cruise:** During sakura season (late March to early April, peak timing varies yearly), the Matsukawa River Cruise becomes Toyama's top hanami (cherry blossom viewing) activity. The boat passes beneath 500+ cherry trees lining the banks, creating a tunnel of pink blossoms. The cruise operates extended hours (10:00–18:00) during peak bloom. Book ahead on weekends (tickets sell out) or arrive at 10:00 opening. Evening cruises (17:00–18:00) coincide with illuminated castle views. **Boat ride details:** The cruise is a 30-minute loop departing from Chikko Bridge (千歳橋). Guides provide Japanese narration (no English, but scenery speaks for itself). The flat-bottomed boats seat 20–30 passengers and are covered (protection from rain/sun). The route passes under 9 bridges (some require ducking) and along tree-lined banks. Photography is excellent from the boat — wide-angle lens recommended to capture tunnel-of-trees effect. **Evening illumination (spring):** During cherry blossom season, Toyama Castle Park and the Matsukawa River are illuminated nightly (18:00–21:30). The moat reflects illuminated cherry trees and castle lights, creating romantic atmosphere. Evening strolls along the riverbank (free) offer similar views to the cruise without the boat fee. The illuminated castle is photogenic from multiple angles — the Chikko Bridge provides a classic framing with moat reflection. **Off-season visit:** Outside cherry blossom season, the cruise is pleasant but less spectacular. Summer offers green shade and cool river breeze. Autumn (mid-November) brings moderate foliage but is less colorful than cherry blossom season. The cruise operates March–November, weather permitting (suspends in rain or high winds). Winter (December–February): cruise suspended; castle park remains accessible but moat is unlit and bare.
