The Magome-Tsumago hike follows a 7.8km preserved section of the Nakasendo (中山道) — the Edo-period mountain route connecting Tokyo and Kyoto. The trail links two post towns (shukuba) where travelers once rested: Magome (Gifu Prefecture) perched on a steep hillside, and Tsumago (Nagano Prefecture) nestled in a valley, both meticulously preserved with prohibition on modern facades, power lines, and cars in historic zones. The walk takes 2.5–3 hours through forested ridges, bamboo groves, terraced rice fields, and riverside paths, passing stone markers, tea houses, and waterfalls.

The trail is moderately easy (mostly downhill from Magome to Tsumago, elevation drop 300m) and requires no special gear beyond walking shoes. Both villages maintain Edo-period aesthetics: wooden inns (ryokan), soba shops, souvenir stalls selling gohei-mochi and chestnut sweets, and preserved honjin (elite travelers' lodgings). The experience delivers time-travel immersion — walking the same stone-paved path samurai and merchants walked 400 years ago.

Guía privilegiada

Premium
**Direction choice:** Hiking Magome to Tsumago is downhill (easier) and deposits you in the more atmospheric Tsumago village for lunch/exploration. The reverse (Tsumago to Magome) is uphill (harder) but quieter since most hikers go the easy direction. Choose based on fitness and crowd tolerance. Luggage forwarding service allows hiking light — drop bags in Magome by 11:30, retrieve in Tsumago by 13:00. **Trail highlights:** The midpoint Odaki-Medaki waterfalls (大滝·女滝, 'male and female falls') offer a rest spot with benches and photo ops. The stone-paved Magome-toge Pass is the steepest section — Edo-era travelers dreaded it; modern walkers handle it in 20 minutes. The final approach to Tsumago descends through rice terraces with mountain views — save camera battery for this stretch. **Tsumago overnight:** Staying in a traditional minshuku or ryokan in Tsumago allows experiencing the village after day-trippers leave (usually by 16:00). Evenings are profoundly quiet — no cars, no streetlights, just lanterns and stars. Recommended: Matsushiro-ya (松代屋, ¥9,000–11,000 per person with meals, 200-year-old building) or Fujioto (藤乙, ¥8,500–10,000, riverside location). Book 1–2 months ahead. **Seasonal timing:** Autumn foliage (late October–early November) is peak beauty but also peak crowds — weekends see 1,000+ hikers. Spring (April–May) offers cherry blossoms and fresh greenery with fewer people. Winter (December–February) is cold and occasionally snowy but nearly empty. Summer (July–August) is hot and buggy but rice paddies are vivid green. **Food:** Tsumago specializes in soba noodles and gohei-mochi (pounded rice grilled with sweet miso). Eat at Tajimaya (田島屋, soba set ¥1,200) or grab gohei-mochi from street stalls (¥300). Magome is known for chestnut sweets (kuri-kinton) — souvenir shops sell boxes for ¥800–1,200.
