Nagano Prefecture has emerged as one of Japan's premier wine regions, with its high elevation (600–900m), volcanic soil, and cool climate proving ideal for grape cultivation. The Chikuma River valley (Saku, Ueda, Suzaka areas) produces elegant cool-climate wines, particularly from European varietals like Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, alongside Japanese native grapes (Koshu, Muscat Bailey A).

Many wineries are small, family-run operations focusing on terroir-driven, low-intervention wines. Winery visits typically include vineyard tours, barrel tastings, and pairings with local Nagano cuisine (soba, apples, venison). The region's wine tourism infrastructure has grown rapidly, with several wineries offering English tours and farm-to-table restaurants. Harvest season (September–October) is peak visiting time, with grape-stomping festivals and new vintage releases.
