The Niyodo River is often called 'Niyodo Blue' (仁淀ブルー) for the surreal, transparent turquoise color of its water — a color so vivid and rare that it has become a pilgrimage site for nature photographers. The blue comes from a combination of limestone bedrock (which filters impurities) and the river's depth and flow, which refracts sunlight in a way that produces an otherworldly cyan hue.

The clearest sections are in the upper and middle river, particularly around Nakatsu Gorge and Yasui Gorge. In summer, you can wade into pools where the water is so transparent that your feet appear to float. The surrounding forest — thick with cedar, ferns, and moss — creates a sense of stepping into a Ghibli film. Kayaking, waterfall hikes, and simply sitting riverside are the main activities.

River gorges accessible during daylight hours (dawn to dusk). Nakatsu Gorge trail open from approximately 8:00 AM. Kayak tours depart at 9:00 AM (April–October). Ikkyuan Ryokan check-in from 3:00 PM.

Cerrado: Natural access year-round. No formal closure, but trail conditions may be poor after heavy rain. Kayak tours suspended during high water and typhoon warnings. Gorge paths may close in winter (December–March) due to ice.

Niyodogawa Town is 90 minutes by car from Kochi City (via Route 33). No direct train access; rental car or tour bus required. Nakatsu Gorge parking area is the main access point. Free entry. Best visited April–November.

**Best viewpoints:** Nakatsu Gorge (仁淀川中津渓谷) has a 1.5km walking trail along the river with swimming holes, waterfalls, and stone bridges. The 'Ryujin no Fuchi' (Dragon God Pool) at the trail's midpoint is the bluest section — arrive before 11:00 for the best light. **Yasui Gorge alternative:** Yasui Gorge (安居渓谷) is deeper into the mountains (20 min further by car) and quieter. The 'Suishō-en' (Water Crystal Garden) section has a series of terraced pools, each a different shade of blue. Best for photographers. **Kayaking:** Niyodo Blue Kayak offers 3-hour guided kayak tours (¥7,500/person, April–October). You paddle through sections inaccessible on foot, entering narrow gorges and still pools where the water is almost supernatural in clarity. English guides available; book 10+ days ahead. **Swimming season:** July–August. Locals swim in designated pools near Nakatsu Gorge. The water is cold (18–20°C) even in summer — bring a wetsuit or prepare for a shock. The sensation of swimming in water this clear is unforgettable. **Photography tips:** The bluest light occurs on sunny mornings (9:00–11:00) when the sun is at a 30–45° angle. Cloudy days wash out the color. A polarizing filter intensifies the blue. Autumn (late October) combines the blue water with red/yellow foliage — the contrast is spectacular. **Combine with:** Chikurin-ji Temple (30 min back toward Kochi) and the Makino Botanical Garden for a full-day loop. Or stay overnight at Ikkyuan Ryokan near Nakatsu Gorge — their kaiseki dinner includes ayu from the Niyodo.
