**Seasonal timing priorities:** Cherry blossom season (late March–early April, peaks vary annually) transforms the outer garden into pink canopy — 600 trees create spectacular but crowded conditions (arrive 9:00 opening). Autumn foliage (mid-November, ±1 week depending on temperature) is equally beautiful and less crowded than spring. Plum blossom season (February) offers solitude and fragrance from 600 plum trees in early bloom. Summer (June–August) is quietest but hot; focus on lotus ponds (peak July) and shaded inner garden paths. **Photography composition:** The three-story pagoda (Kyoto Tomyoji Temple, relocated 1914) across the pond is the signature shot. Best vantage point: from the south shore of the main pond, early morning (8:00–10:00 summer, 9:00–11:00 winter) when light is soft and pagoda is front-lit. Use telephoto lens (70–200mm) to compress pagoda with seasonal elements (cherry blossoms/autumn maples) in foreground. Overcast days create even lighting without harsh shadows. Night illumination during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons (17:00–20:30, separate evening entry ¥900) offers dramatic lighting but tripods prohibited. **Historic buildings tour:** The Inner Garden (内苑, naien) contains Hara family's original residence and tea houses — accessible only during specific time windows (10:00–16:00, check upon entry). Highlights: Choshukaku (聴秋閣, 17th-century tea house relocated from Kyoto, minimal interior with garden view), Rinshunkaku (臨春閣, three-building complex from Wakayama, elaborate painted screens and carvings). These buildings charge no extra fee but require removing shoes and careful handling of fragile architecture. Allow 30 minutes for Inner Garden in addition to main garden stroll.
