**Crowd timing:** The festival runs seven to ten days (exact dates announced each October). Opening day (usually Feb 5-6) and the first weekend pack the sidewalks shoulder-to-shoulder—expect shuffling rather than walking. Weekdays see half the people; Tuesday and Wednesday are lightest. Final weekend draws families, and by the last day (typically Feb 11) the sculptures have visible melt damage. If you want clean snow and space to move, visit mid-week during days 3-5. **Best viewing hours:** Sculptures sit under daylight all day, but they look flat and grayish without lighting. Illumination starts at dusk (around 17:00 in early February) and runs until 22:00. The magic window is 17:30-18:30, when the sky still holds blue light and the floods are on—everything glows. By 19:00 it's full dark and crowded. Morning walks (7:00-9:00) let you see the sculptures in natural light with almost no one around; you'll notice carving details (hair strands, building texture) that wash out under evening floods. **What you'll see at Odori:** The park runs 12 blocks; blocks 4-10 hold the massive sculptures (12-15 meters tall). Recent years have included a full-scale reproduction of Angkor Wat, a Star Wars AT-AT walker, and a detailed samurai castle with interior rooms you can walk through. Each sculpture takes 3-4 weeks to build and lasts 10 days before demolition crews break them down with excavators. Smaller sculptures (3-5 meters) by citizen teams and international competitors fill the gaps between the big builds. Quality varies wildly—some look amateur, others rival the military work. **Susukino ice site:** Five blocks south of Odori, Susukino's site (South 4 to South 7, Ekimae-dori) focuses on ice instead of snow. Clear ice blocks from Lake Shikotsu get carved into transparent sculptures—fish, dragons, abstract shapes—with colored lights frozen inside or projected through. You can walk among them, and some are touchable. Ice carving competitions happen here mid-week; watch teams work with chainsaws and chisels if you're around during the day (10:00-16:00). **Photography setup:** Tripods are banned in Odori Park from 17:00-22:00 due to crowding; you'll need to handhold or brace against railings. Phone night mode works fine for snapshots. If you're serious, bring a camera that shoots clean at ISO 3200+ and a lens around 24-70mm f/2.8. The lighting cycles every 20 minutes: white floods → colored gels (red, blue, purple) → projection mapping video. Wait through one full cycle to see which lighting you like best. Wide shots from ground level make the sculptures look smaller than they are; step back 30 meters and shoot with a 70mm+ focal length to compress perspective. **Cold weather gear:** February temps in Sapporo average -7°C, but standing still for an hour (which you will, looking at sculptures) makes it feel like -15°C.
