A single unstaffed platform on the Yosan Line with a wooden bench, a corrugated shelter, and the Iyo-nada sea directly beyond the fence. Until the coast road was widened it was the closest railway station to the sea in Japan, and although several others now claim that, the composition here — bench, platform edge, horizon, nothing else — is why photographers keep coming.

It has appeared in a long run of advertisements and films and is well known within Japan as the station where you go to watch the sun go down. Trains are infrequent, which is part of the point: you arrive, and then you wait. Parking is severely limited and JR asks visitors not to use the station's own spaces, which are for people dropping off passengers.

Okubo, Futami-cho, Iyo, on the JR Yosan Line. Under an hour by car from Matsuyama. Parking at the station is for passenger drop-off only and JR asks tourists not to use it; there are around 5 spaces and an overflow lot for about 20 cars roughly a short walk. An alternative is to park at the Michi-no-Eki Futami near Iyo-Kamitanada Station and arrive by train. Free to visit; train services are infrequent.

Parking at Michi-no-Eki Futami and taking a train in solves it and is more in the spirit of the place. **Check the timetable before you go.** Services are sparse. Arriving by car and leaving after ten minutes misses the point; arriving by train means committing to the interval. **Sunset, facing west.** The Iyo-nada is straight out from the platform and the sun goes into it. That is the photograph and the reason for the crowd at that hour. **It is an operating station.** People use it to get to work. Stand clear of the platform edge and out of the way of passengers. **Only five spaces at the station.** With about twenty more five minutes away. On a fine evening that is not enough.
