Shirahama (白浜, 'white beach') is Wakayama's premier beach resort town, famous for its 600-meter crescent of white quartz sand beach (Shirarahama Beach), coastal onsen hot springs, and Adventure World — a safari park housing the world's largest breeding population of giant pandas outside China. The town combines tropical beach vibes with traditional Japanese hot spring culture, making it a rare hybrid destination.

Shirarahama Beach features imported white sand (the natural sand was grayed by pollution and replaced with Australian quartz in the 1960s) and turquoise waters ideal for swimming (July-August). The surrounding coastline is dotted with dramatic sea cliffs and rock formations, including Senjojiki (千畳敷, 'thousand tatami mats') — a wave-cut limestone platform resembling stacked tatami mats, and Sandanbeki Cliff — a 50-meter vertical sea cliff with a cave accessible by elevator. Shirahama's onsen district offers seaside rotenburo (outdoor baths) where bathers soak while watching sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Adventure World combines zoo, aquarium, and safari park — highlights include panda breeding center (8 pandas, including cubs), African safari bus tour (giraffes, lions), and marine mammal shows. The town is family-oriented but also appeals to couples seeking romantic sunset onsen experiences.

Guía privilegiada

Premium
**Adventure World strategy:** The park's panda breeding program is world-renowned (17 cubs born since 2000). Panda viewing requires timed-entry tickets — book online 1 month ahead for weekend visits. Arrive at 10:00 opening for best panda activity (they sleep midday). The Breeding Center allows close-up viewing through glass (morning feeding 10:30-11:30). The safari tour (45 min, included in admission) takes you through free-roaming African animal habitats — giraffes approach the bus windows. Allocate 5-6 hours for full park experience. **Onsen recommendations:** Saki-no-yu (崎の湯) is an outdoor oceanfront rotenburo built directly on coastal rocks — waves crash against the bath's edge during high tide. Best timing: 90 minutes before sunset (winter 16:00, summer 18:00) for golden light and dramatic wave action. Gender-separated, bathing suits prohibited (traditional onsen etiquette). Alternatively, Shirasuna (白砂) is a free footbath on the beach promenade — casual and family-friendly. **Senjojiki sunset:** The limestone platform is spectacular at sunset (year-round) when the white rock glows orange and waves crash against the formation. Accessible by car or tourist bus (5 min from Shirahama Station). The surface is uneven — wear sturdy shoes. Winter storms create dramatic wave action; summer sunsets are gentler but equally photogenic. Combine with Sandanbeki Cliff (10 min drive) for a complete coastal scenic tour.
