Sunset light hits the city from behind, creating flat lighting. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise (check seasonal times) for best conditions. **Night view:** Shiroyama is one of Japan's 'new three great night views' (日本新三大夜景) — the city lights spread below with Sakurajima's silhouette dark against the bay. The view is free unlike Hakodate or Kobe ropeways. Peak times: Friday/Saturday 19:00–21:00 (crowded); weekday nights are quieter. **Saigo Takamori cave:** Halfway up the hiking trail, a small cave marks where Saigo (the 'last samurai') spent his final hours during the 1877 rebellion.
