Early morning (8:00-9:00) provides soft light and minimal crowds. The Nishinomaru Garden's pond reflects the tenshu during calm mornings — this shot is possible from the garden's western edge (tripod useful). Spring cherry blossoms create a pink-white foreground for castle photos; autumn ginkgo trees add golden tones. **Castle interior:** The museum exhibits are entirely in Japanese with minimal English signage. Highlights include Kishu Tokugawa clan armor (distinctive tiger motifs), matchlock guns, and lacquerware gifted between feudal lords. The steep wooden stairs between floors are characteristic of defensive castle design (easy to defend, difficult to attack). The top floor's views are best in clear weather — Mount Koya is visible to the east on clear days. **Ninja House for families:** The Wakayama Rekihaku Museum's Edo-period townscape recreation includes hands-on ninja elements: rotating walls, hidden floor compartments, and optical illusion rooms. Staff (some English-speaking) demonstrate shuriken throwing and ninja stealth techniques. The facility is less polished than Kyoto's ninja attractions but more authentic to local history (Kishu ninjas served the Tokugawa clan). Children under 12 find it engaging; adults may find it brief (30-45 min visit). Combined castle + ninja house makes a half-day cultural itinerary.
