Yahiko Shrine

**Autumn foliage timing:** The cedar approach is green year-round, but the deciduous forest on Mt. Yahiko creates spectacular autumn color mid-October to early November. The ropeway view at peak color (usually November 1–10) is extraordinary — the entire mountainside turns crimson and gold against the blue Sea of Japan. **Yahiko chrysanthemum festival:** November 1–24, the shrine hosts the Yahiko Chrysanthemum Festival (弥彦菊まつり) — elaborate chrysanthemum sculptures (life-size humans, animals, buildings made entirely of chrysanthemum flowers) are displayed throughout the shrine grounds. This is Niigata's premier flower arrangement event, utterly unknown outside the prefecture. **Fire festival (April 1):** Yahiko's annual fire festival features 30-meter-high bonfires lit at the shrine's approach at dusk. The ritual, dating to the 8th century, symbolizes agricultural renewal. Sake and amazake are distributed freely to attendees — arrive 17:00 for bonfire lighting at 18:30.
