Every winter (late January to late March), drift ice (流氷, ryuhyo) from the Russian Far East floats south through the Sea of Okhotsk and reaches Abashiri's coastline, transforming the sea into a white frozen landscape. The ice floes, some meters thick, create an otherworldly seascape of jagged white sheets, turquoise cracks, and ice cliffs. Abashiri's icebreaker ships (Aurora and Aurora II) cruise through the ice, cracking and pushing floes aside with a thunderous crunch.

The drift ice phenomenon is rare globally — Abashiri is one of the southernmost drift ice locations in the Northern Hemisphere. The ice brings cold-water marine life (Okhotsk seals, sea eagles) and creates unique ecosystems. The cruise is weather-dependent, and some years have minimal ice (climate change is reducing ice coverage), making each sighting feel more precious.

Car: From Sapporo via Hokkaido Expressway to Kitami, then Route 39 to Abashiri (~3.5 hrs in good conditions).

Ice timing: Drift ice arrives in Abashiri late January (earliest) to early March (latest), with peak coverage mid-February. Ice conditions vary annually — check the Abashiri Drift Ice Information Center's real-time updates (ryu-hyo.jp) before visiting. Some years have abundant ice (2010s), recent years (2020s) have less due to warming. Book flexible dates if possible.

Cruise experience: The icebreaker Aurora (capacity 450) departs Abashiri port and sails 1 hour through ice fields. When ice is present, the ship crushes through with vibrating, cracking sounds. When ice is distant (thin years), the ship sails to ice location (may not reach ice). The upper deck (outdoor) offers best views and photo opportunities but is brutally cold (-10°C to -15°C with wind chill). Indoor heated cabins have large windows.

Clothing: Dress in extreme winter gear — insulated jacket, waterproof outer layer, thick gloves, hat covering ears, scarf, insulated boots. Hand warmers (kairo) essential. The outdoor deck's wind chill is severe — even 5 minutes requires full protection. Binoculars useful for spotting seals on ice floes.

Wildlife: Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed eagles hunt along ice edges. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed but common during peak ice season. The cruise crew announces sightings and slows the ship for viewing.
